The Sifted Church

The Sifted Church

What would you do if the Holy Spirit directed you to an uncomfortable Scripture for encouragement? All of us desire to hear encouragement and words of comfort, and I want to comfort you with this: God will always direct you to His holy written Word for the encouragement you need to draw closer to Him and to walk in Spirit and in truth. It may not be the Word that you or I want to hear, but His Word is always the truth.

While sitting on my front porch several days ago, I was spending some quiet time with God. In the stillness of that moment, A Scripture dropped in my spirit, and as it did, hot tears streamed down my face. It was Luke 22:31-32,

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

ESV

What an encouragement, right? It did not feel like it in the moment, but what follows in verse 32 is comforting because it points back to Jesus Christ, our High Priest and Intercessor, “I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail.” No one wants to be sifted or directed to a passage of Scripture comparing a point in one’s life to a preeminent point in another’s life that is an element of suffering. I will tell you that this time personally has been one of the most difficult in my life. As an cohabitant of the secret place, I pursued God in this time to get understanding. This moment was illuminating and gut wrenching. When I further studied this Word, I realized that this not only applied to myself but to the body of Christ. I truly believe that there is a sifting taking place in those who will not despise it. Loss may come, but I am telling you, when Christ is your gain, it matters not.

When studying this passage, understand that in the first verse, the use of the word “you” is plural. Satan had asked to sift all of the disciples. Peter was not the chosen one to be sifted, but he would scatter like the majority for a time, becoming like the chaff caught by the wind while spiritually weighed down by fear. However, the greatness was not found in Peter, but in a Savior that interceded for him and ministered over Peter to strengthen the brothers when he returned from the aftermath of the sifting. Hallelujah that we belong to a God who makes intercession for us so that He may be glorified in the earth!

According to the Complete Word Study Dictionary, the Greek word for sifting means “to shake as a grain in a sieve. Figuratively, to agitate and prove by trial and afflictions.” Sifting is a process to remove those parts that are a hindrance. Sifting involves threshing and winnowing, beating and tossing to ultimately rid the wheat of the chaff. As I sat on my porch thinking on the sifting, I realized that we have two choices in the sifting: we can be found in Him and fall as wheat in the winnowing or we can be blown by the wind and identify as chaff. Many times we try and escape the agitation in the sifting. There has to be an easier way, but sifting is necessary because without the sifting, the harvest cannot come to fruition.

There are many in the church being sifted right now. It is a collective “you”. There are things going on that are bringing agitation, trial and affliction. It feels like a beating and a tossing taking place. Things are being stripped off and chaff is blowing away so that the pure in Christ remains. There is a proving taking place in the trial, and the proof is our intimacy with Christ while resting upon the foundation of the Word of God. Will we remain in the winnowing? Even if you buckle under the pressure, return to Him. This is all about Him. The shaking going on around us and within us as the body is a sifting. We have no need to fear in the process because Jesus makes intercession for us. A sifted church is a shifted church.

  1. This is such CONFIRMATION!!! Last month, I endured trial, after trial, after trail. And when I decided to fast and seek the Lord, He told me that I was being sifted. I had no clue what it meant… so I took it as a season of pruning. (Which is kind of the same LOL) But the fact that you posted this EXACT Word… it just releases me into the arms of Christ! With Him, all things are possible! So thank you for your faithfulness, and for speaking life into our lives! God bless you!!

  2. Thank you for this word of encouragement. I lost my testimony. God delivered me if 90 pounds & I gained 30 back. Yes, I feel as though I failed God & embarrassed Him.
This morning in my time with Him, He told me today was a new day of victory.
Your words confirm this to my heart. Peter got another chance to serve the Lord. I am getting another chance too.
    Thank you again,

  3. Those of a pure heart shall SEE God!! Many want to hear God..but hearing is muffled in the earth realm!! (Earth is a lower realm than the up here diamensions) but seeing is the piercing and the going through the everlasting doors to see Him!) There….in the perfection we stand …pure, like Him….this is where we deal with our junk! In His love, for who change us but Him? Our junk is our false self…in Him we realize who we are, allowing Him to reveal who we really are…so we are ABLE to let go of all that is false and not of Him. He rejoices as we shine and stand in His redemptive righteouness, purified and clean bought with the price of His blood…letting go of the old..behold all things made new…..we are His joy and delight always…just come to Him…wiping our tears of sorrow …exchanging them for tears of utter joy in our shifting of our natures …our maturing of of our character….we are blessed beyong measure in and by the power of His love, grace and perfection! I honor you my sister for the truth you stand in…and our change by…bringing Him such great glory by the beauty of your spirit…..deborah

  4. The week before Passover as I had been spending time with my children reading through the events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus. This same scripture was illuminated to me with the same message you’ve just shared Dawn!!

My spirit bears witness to this message!! As well as myself going through a period of testing and proving by the Lord through situations and circumstances in my life. Some of which are out of my control.

When I recognize that God is in control of my life and he’s allowed these situations in my life to prove me, to purify me, to further put to death the flesh and the works of the flesh, then I must realize that by fighting back and not submitting I am rebelling against God.

Through this trying time I’ve been hearing “Beware the accuser who is at work trying to pit us one against the other, even and especially in the church because he does not want us walking in LOVE and UNITY!” The temptation here is to react in the flesh. If I do not recognize that my war is not against flesh and blood but against principalities I will fight back in the flesh! The enemy will temp us to turn and fight against the people that are causing the pain and agitation, whereas the Spirit is calling me to submit to the Lord and put to death my flesh, to walk in the Spirit instead! Calling me to war on my knees and to receive the power to walk in love in all situations!!

My first battle is with my flesh, to submit it to God’s will!! I must die so He can increase in Me! When I realize this, and quickly discern the accuser then I know this wasn’t sent to break me, but to prove me and prepare me for greater things!

The best I can do in these situations is trust God and submit myself (all that I am) into the obedience of Christ to do His will no matter what it takes. Yes the flesh aches and complains, but the flesh must die. Just as Jesus took up the cross and had to suffer and die before he was resurrected. So we must take up our cross, suffer in the flesh and allow it to die. The flesh must die in order for God’s will to come about in our life.

Also I’m hearing the words of Jesus: “the prince of this world is coming and he has nothing to use against me!!” If we are living by the Spirit, the enemy, the accuser has nothing that he can use against us!! Therefore when we are sifted, all the chaff has been blown away and we come out as wheat!! What is wheat used for? To make bread! That’s another topic!

Then we can truly say, not in theory but experientially: It is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me! Not my will but Yours be done God! It is impossible to fulfill God’s will for our life if we don’t allow Him to grow us and mature us spiritually!

I am so excited about this! About what the Lord is doing and about to do in and through the lives of those who have truly submitted themselves to His Lordship!! Glory to the Lord forever!!

  5. Yep. This is reiterating my very words, spoken last Oct.-Nov. A sifting certainly came personally, and it’s coming to the Body of Christ. There is, ‘A whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on! My concern is mostly for those who aren’t ready or able to embrace it. There are storms coming, and many are not sheltered on the Rock. Oh God, in Your judgement, remember mercy!

  6. You heard right, my dear! Much SIFTING is coming to the Church in our nation. The Bride remains!

  7. Thank you for this word of meat in dud season ❣️So Grateful for those who are humble enough to embrace this with all our hearts and trust Our High Priest, Jesus to pray the same prayer for us that our faith in Him will not waver not fail as This was His prayer for The apostle Peter. Jesus never prayed that Peter would not be sifted, and stated he prayed that his faith would remain ! May we all Pray this for ourselves and each other as we see the days are evil. Let us live in such away that we would honor our King in all our ways acknowledging Him ! May His unfailing love Sustain us through this process🙏
