Reviewing Bethel Part 1: Prophecy 101

Reviewing Bethel Part 1: Prophecy 101

A few weeks ago, Bethel released a video in their series, Rediscover Bethel, dealing with their teaching on basic prophetic ministry. I took time to listen to this video while keeping my Bible open and taking notes. The more I listened, the more I noticed familiar words and phrases mentioned, which originated from a DVD curriculum Kris Vallotton had released several years ago about prophetic ministry. I had taught from this curriculum provided in the former church I attended, the church where I was once identified as a prophet.

After watching this video, I was compelled to study it further, search the Scriptures referenced, and spend time watching older videos from Kris Vallotton on this subject. I have recorded a more in depth podcast on this topic, and I am writing this blog post in hopes of helping others to become students of the Word of God and to understand the importance of examining teaching. The focus of this review is on the teaching itself and is not an assault on the individual. With that being said, the main question I want you to come away asking yourself is, “Should I be listening to this teaching from Bethel and does it agree with Scripture?”

In the first nine minutes of this video, the discussion begins with the difference between Old Testament and New Testament prophetic ministry, citing 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 as the focus for New Testament prophetic ministry. The Old Testament prophet is described by Kris as a covenant enforcer, judging the people and telling them how they had fallen short. However, in the New Testament, the role has changed because of reconciliation through Jesus Christ. He also stated that prophetic words are now judged under the New Testament rather than the person. He stated that the best depiction between Old Testament and New Testament prophetic ministry is found in Malachi 4:5-6, claiming that Elijah was moved on the other side of the cross and linking him to 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 and concluding he reconciles families back to God. He concludes this section with stating, “If you’re taking your model and theology from the Old covenant for prophetic ministry, you’re missing the beauty of reconciliation ministry in prophetic ministry and finding the gold in people.”

This final statement, along with the teaching connecting Malachi 4 with 2 Corinthians 5 are areas needing to be addressed as the Scriptures do not agree with his assessment or his final statement. When looking at 2 Corinthians 5:17-20, we can see by reading this passage that the One who reconciles individuals to God is Jesus Christ. Neither Elijah nor modern prophetic ministry has anything to do with this passage. These verses are ultimately centered upon the gospel of Jesus Christ and the reminder to believers that the ministry of reconciliation is Christ centered. As for Malachi 4:5-6, these verses applied to Israel, and the one to come in the spirit of Elijah was John the Baptist. We see this in Matthew 11:10-14, 17:10-13 from Jesus Christ Himself. John the Baptist was not on the other side of the cross. Rather, he was the final Old Testament prophet preparing the way of the Lord. Luke 1:17 is another passage that helps us to see Malachi 4:5-6 is speaking of John the Baptist, and what is fascinating here is the angel prophesying to Zechariah concerning John quotes part of Malachi 4:6. We can also see John the Baptist’s apparel would have reminded the people of Elijah (Matthew 3:4, 2 Kings 1:8). From this we can see the teaching connecting Malachi 4 and 2 Corinthians 5 is not correct, and we are not called to be like Elijah. We are called to follow Christ and to be like Him.

The Old Testament actually does reveal the beauty of reconciliation. The prophets ministered a type and shadow of the gospel, calling the people to repent and to turn back to God. They also prophesied of the coming Messiah. The true gospel of Jesus Christ does not find the gold in people, and we are not instructed to find the gold in people. We are instructed to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel reveals our need for a Savior and that without Him, the wrath of God abides on us. Christ brings good news that He has satisfied the wrath of God. The message has not changed. The message is still to repent and believe. We are to place our faith in Christ alone to save us and to give us eternal life.

We also find that the Old Testament is intertwined with the New Testament. There are 283 verses from the Old Testament in the New Testament, and the vast majority of these verses point back to Jesus Christ. It is also worth noting that though this statement does not seem to view the Old Testament in a positive light, I noticed Old Testament passages were used frequently examples of teaching on prophetic ministry in this video. In other words, the Old Testament model to a certain degree was essentially brought into the New Testament in order to validate the perspective on prophetic ministry. This video clip was also interesting and applicable for this discussion as Malachi 4:5-6 is mentioned in a negative connotation rather than as the crux of their understanding of prophetic ministry from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

At the nine minute mark, the topic of hearing God was discussed with John 10:27 being mentioned in this. However, this passage is not about hearing the voice of God in listening prayer or any other such way, but this passage contextually has to do with salvation. The Bible is acknowledged as the final authority to judge prophetic ministry, but there seems to be a focus on valuing prophetic words outside of Scripture and not dismissing them. Kris in this section also discussed the difference between foretelling and forthtelling, using Ezekiel 37 and Mark 11:23 as examples for forthtelling, which he defines as “causing things to happen.” We should note that Mark 11:23 was a metaphor in Jewish literature for doing what seemed impossible and Jesus ascribing this to God.

At fourteen minutes, Kris discusses the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man, stating if we do not say what God is saying then it will not happen. But this seems to make man sovereign and God dependent upon us. The point is made in this video that prophecy is hearing God speaking and then speaking out loud what God is saying. However, if you listen to this video, you will hear the claim no one hears perfectly. So, the questions become how are we to trust the prophecy is from God while claiming fallibility? Based on the belief no one claims to hear God perfectly, how do we trust Scripture if fallible men of God could not hear God perfectly? The answer to the second is we know they did hear prophecy without error because we trust the Word of God to be the voice of God speaking through those who were divinely inspire and carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). The Old Testament prophets of God heard God without trouble, and when speaking through these weak vessels, it was without error and under a lesser covenant by the way.

At twenty one minutes, the gift of prophecy is addressed, and during this discussion, he defines a word of knowledge being a word about what is currently true or currently happening. However, we do not see this definition in Scripture for this gift. He does this because he goes on to elaborate how a word of knowledge is not prophecy and if an individual spoke a word over you of a specific vocation, for example, and that was not true at the time, he states you should not dismiss that word because prophecy is foretelling and forthtelling and “the value placed on the word determines the power you receive from the word.” In the midst of this discussion, he uses the Israelites not being able to go into the Promised Land with the exception of Caleb and Joshua because of the people’s lack of faith in the prophetic word, and he states, “Sometimes what gets blamed as bad prophecy is faithless people who refuse to put their trust in God through the declaration.”

I believe statements and a belief system like this remove critical thinking and true Biblical discernment from believers in Christ. It removes accountability from the person who spoke the word claiming to be from God, and it places the blame on the individual. This teaching brings confusion to an individual in this type of environment with the potential of becoming hesitant to test any word given in fear that it is truly God speaking and they are despising prophecy if they call it into question. They could even be told since they place such little value on that word by testing it, then there is little power to receive it.

I will also say in the prophetic movement, there seems to be a low view of Scripture and a higher view of extrabiblical revelation and supernatural experiences. Yes, Scripture is referenced, but it is all too often misappropriated to mean something it does not mean. It is used many times to validate the revelation given rather than to minister the revelation in Scripture already provided. Faith in a personal prophetic word is emphasized as a word from the Lord while saying that it may not be perfect but it should not be discarded because it could be from the Lord. Do you see how confusing this can be? Meanwhile, when a prophetic word is called into question and tested against Scripture, some are accused of worshiping the Bible.

Why is the Word of God not sufficient? Why do we want more at the possible expense of dishonoring God? When I personally think about once having this similar mindset about the prophetic ministry, it saddens me that I had such a low view of God without realizing it while having a high view of myself. When God spoke in the Word, it was clear. It was authoritative. Loopholes were not created in order to avoid accountability or to manipulate people. As believers in Christ, we must have a high view of Scripture to provide instruction and correction to us. And we should not be fearful to test the current prophetic movement.

  1. Sweet Sister.
I strongly urge you to develop a ministry that focuses solely on teaching the Word and not attacking others or their understanding of the Word. Unfortunately, since your church hurt happened, your posts (which used to be a good indicator of the name “Lovesick Scribe”) have now become embittered. They seem to reveal your church hurt more and more. I’m just making you aware of what you may not see.

    1. Thank you for your comment Anita. Can you please provide specific examples in this blog post where the Word was not taught in the proper context? Are you troubled that God’s Word is being misappropriated by leaders in the church such as in this teaching? It is rather sad that fellow believers in Christ are not permitted to test teachings against Scripture without being falsely accused of “church hurt”. I actually thank God for what happened to me. If it had not, I would still be in deception and under false teaching, bringing reproach on the name of Christ. Ironically, you are upset at me and doing the same thing you accuse me of doing. There was no ad hominem attack on the individual in this post. The teaching was evaluated. I urge you to test the teaching being addressed with the Word of God and to also check your own heart. Blessings!

      1. Dear Dawn; i so appreciate what you are saying about false theology; i am thankful that you speak the truth in love. i was one caught up in false theology and would have remained so, if God had not opened up my blinded eyes. I am so thankful for you and others who boldly proclaimed the truth in love, regardless if i (or others) might get upset, God delivered me from false theology because of my brothers and sisters proclaiming the truth from the Scriptures! God bless you always!

        1. Praise the Lord, Anne! I understand how offensive it can be as well. God allowed me to see the log in my own eye and to take responsibility for my own actions. Though I was under false teaching, I helped in perpetuating it. These are not fun subjects to address. I do not enjoy doing them. I do enjoy studying the Word though and helping others. Blessings to you!!

          1. I can so relate and the Lord has radically humbled me through convicting me of my pride, and in his mercy bringing me to repentance. I honestly have been debating if I just got born again! Otherwise I was like a foolish Galatian who moved from the Spirit that allowed me to believe to choose good works/law. Paul modeled as Saul that we can be devout, love the Lord, love righteousness, and still not have our faith in Jesus. My faith was largely in myself and I didn’t even see it!! God did, and with severe mercy and severe grace has brought me into severe liberation, but it has all has felt severe and been a painful bleeding out. I feel continually encouraged by reading your writing and hearing your process because I connect with it so deeply, especially now after what God has just been doing in me. Thank you so much!

    2. I love your comment here very much but I also love her blog here. Once upon a time we used to attend a church where the pastor crossed the dangerous but subtle line into criticizing other pastors’ theological views for several Sundays to the point we felt so ill and never returned. I believe a pure focused teaching will help readers to tell from false and true spiritual meat. Believers do have responsibility to grow into maturity by learning to discern and stick only with those true vessels of God. Prophet Sadhu mentioned several times that if you feel something is wrong about a pastor in your church, after telling him in person respectfully and if he still refuses, then just leave quietly without telling anyone else nor taking anyone with you. I have followed his counsel and am very happy about where I’m now. By the way, those pastors who have refused to be corrected have already lost their better due position in God’s kingdom so enough of my further saying therefore it also saves me precious times. Blessings.

  2. I ask myself if others were not in ministry does it mean you wouldn’t have content to post? This is because I notice almost all your content is reactive something not even Christ or the early Apostles did. I think you need to take a break and go get healed from church hurt and leave alone Ryan Lestrange and all the other people I see you subbing. The body of Christ needs people who are healed and not bleeding all over. Wishing you all the best.

    1. Hi, Priscilla! We do not know each other, but I want to thank you for taking the time to comment on this particular post. I appreciate the comment even if it is disagreeable.

I would like to respectfully respond to your comment if I may. I took the liberty to go back to the beginning of this year and to see how many times I addressed a topic where a particular individual was involved in the teaching addressed and the teaching was tested against Scripture rather than personally attacking the individual. Out of the 26 posts from the beginning of this year, there were 5 posts: this one, the one on seven mountains, the one on inner healing, the one addressing the Prophetic Standards Statement, and the one on Christian deliverance. I referenced books written by 4 of the 5. If you could show me in those posts where I personally attacked those individuals, I would appreciate it. I do not like to engage in personal attacks. That is unfruitful and it does not glorify Christ. My concern is more for the teaching and if it is Biblically sound and truly glorifying Jesus Christ. To be frank, no one is immune to evaluation, which you have proven here by assuming things about me and making them out to be fact. I would simply ask that you take what I am saying and test it against Scripture. That is the foundation being used here.

I may be misunderstanding your second statement so let me try and address it, and if I misunderstood, please feel free to respond. The Word of God instructs us to use Biblical discernment and to test all things. For example, Jesus Christ warned His disciples about false prophets, and he said they would know them by their fruits. That would imply inspecting and judging in order to tell good fruit from bad fruit. Another example would be when Paul told the believers in Romans 16:17-18 to mark and avoid those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine they were taught and to avoid them. He called them deceivers and that they were not servants of Jesus Christ. This required judging and Biblical discernment. 26 of the 27 books in the New Testament warn against false teachers or false prophets in some way. We cannot recognize the truth from false without inspecting and testing against Scripture.

I typically write once a week on my blog. I do talk about my personal error and I talk about topics from a Biblical perspective that are at times controversial to some. I have also talked about personal areas several times this year unrelated to any of my former leaders because life has gone on after them. I take full responsibility for the error I was in and have asked the Lord to forgive me. I also pray for leaders who perpetuated false teaching then and continue to do so. I hold no malice toward them. I pray that God extends the same mercy to them He did to me. The only frustration is in deceptive teaching that points more to self rather than to Jesus Christ and knowing that others are being led astray without testing what they are hearing and seeing.

I attend a sound Biblical church where the Word of God is taught and where my family and I are growing in the truth of the Word while worshiping Christ in Spirit and truth. I have to tell you, it is freeing and it has been healing because of the truth. I have a love for the Word and studying it I did not have before as I was depending upon my experiences and such to guide me and to be the barometer of truth. This has further solidified my relationship with Jesus Christ.

Respectfully, the church needs sound Biblical teaching rather than catchy slogans. If you are possibly expressing this out of loyalty or honor to a particular leader, I would strongly suggest you test what is being taught and that the One who is held in most honor is Jesus Christ. Godly leaders do not despise being tested or questioned.

Thanks again for your comment. Grace and peace to you!

      Dawn

      1. I have been sitting under a leader who closely associates with Ryan, before I met her though born again i was in demonic cycles loss of money to the tune of $120,000, in debt to the tune of $70,000, prison time, about 9 stints of homelessness, sleeping hungry etc. This was between 2011-2019. In 2020 I began dealing with Apostle Tamara Mcnair Hicks and in the last 2 years I have my own place, slowly getting out of debt, has plenty of food etc. She prayed with me, counselling me on how to pray, gave me money to get a place and supported me financially a couple of more times .See a man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an argument. I am a part of their fruit and thus while they are human and are not perfect your constant barrage against Pentecostal/Charismatic leaders is very wanting. I have studied my bible cover to cover every year from 2012 so I am quite familiar with the bible and a lot of what you are going against like speaking in tongues, dreams, the prophetic are very much biblical and of today.

Anyway my life has been changed and I’ll forever stand by the servants God used to help me out.

        1. Priscilla, I appreciate you sharing some of your personal experiences. I too have experiences, but I am addressing things on the foundation of Scripture, particularly things such as tongues, dreams, the prophetic, etc. because my experiences, though very real and powerful, are not to be used to interpret Scripture. Rather, they are to be judged by Scripture. So in the popular statement, “A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an argument”, are you saying that the “argument” of Scripture is inferior to your experiences?

Respectfully, the burden is now on you to show in Scripture where I have misled you and others. I am not claiming to be incapable of error. I have proven that in what I used to believe about things without going to the source of truth and testing those things, and I am reminded everyday of my need for Jesus Christ as I fall short daily as a human being, a wife and a mother. What I am asking is since you are a student of the Word, you show me where I have misappropriated the Scriptures I present and the understanding of them in context. That should be the real issue here because glorifying Jesus Christ and lifting Him up above every other name is priority. I also see no mention of the gospel of Jesus Christ in your experiences. Can you please share with me the gospel of Jesus Christ based on Scripture? I do not mean that in a demeaning way. I sincerely would like to know.

Also, here are a few blog posts I have done this year having to do with the study of Scripture as well as personal growth through faith in Jesus Christ. I pray you find them encouraging. Grace and peace, sister!

          1. I thought I said I am born again, I also thought I said God used those ministers to help me out I wonder if that’s not sufficient gospel for you? If I say I am born again who else would have done it for me and why exactly would I be interested in the ministers of the gospel while I could be spending the rest of my life watching Cardi B and Meghan the Stallion and living out my every carnal desire?

I have read your content and I also watched your interview with Doreen where you confessed to have never read through the word for a whole 18yrs yet your biggest problem was Ryan rather than your diligence and lack of intimacy with God.

I also read your post where you said you wrote false prophetic words which to me showed your lack of fear and reverence for God yet Charismatic/Pentecostal leaders were your biggest problem rather than you being in the church and lying to the flock.

          2. Hi, Priscilla,

Respectfully, I think you are actually wrongly recalling what I said to Doreen. I stated that I read the Word, but I did not study the Word. I was guilty, like many of us, of taking Scripture out of context. You stated that you have studied your Bible cover to cover every year since 2012. So what I am asking should not be a problem. Again, I do not mean that in a demeaning way. If you are concerned about my eternal well being and truly wish me well on my journey, why are you not presenting the gospel to me? Also, why are you not willing to help me in understanding where I have led others astray in my blog posts with specific examples contradicting Scripture?

I want to clear up other things you have said, but it will be in vain and it will most likely not be well received. I am actually trying to handle this conversation with gentleness and humility and in such a way to honor Jesus Christ and according to the Word. I will continue to be respectful to you regardless of your conduct and misrepresentation of me.

I sincerely wonder why you are reading my blogs and following on other potential outlets if my content is such error and dishonoring. I also wonder why you take such issue with me being honest about my error and repentance while trying to hold against me in a contorted way what Christ has already forgiven me for doing, which was falsely prophesying due to being deceived. Unfortunately, that is the problem with deception.

I am sincerely wondering who sounds more bitter here and who needs to step back from saying anything. The freedom I now have I would not trade, and the time I spent in this movement will be used for and has already been used for His glory in ministering to others coming out of it. The thing is many people did not have an issue with me until I began actually writing things based upon the context of Scripture. People were fine with me when I wrote vague mystical words, including my leaders and numerous Christian media outlets, which I find interesting in light of your last statement. I am at peace now with whatever is said about me in a derogatory way. As long as Christ is glorified and people are pointed back to the truth of Scripture, that is all I care about.

I will end with words far greater than my own:

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Grace and peace to you, Priscilla.

  3. In 1 Corinthians 3 Paul talked about building on the foundation of Jesus Christ His death and resurrection. I don’t think your eternal destiny is in any jeopardy my comments are on the building part where you are hoping to build on bringing others down. For example I saw you say you spoke in false tongues which was your choice really and doesn’t in any shape or form negate true tongues. I for example has prayed in tongues in my private prayer time sometimes 3-9hrs in a day and I have seen God bring clarity and even a message to a friend who was going to get into some occultism unknowingly. I aim to highlight that you came from a place where you willingly indulged in false practices from giving prophetic words, tongues, dreams etc and now want to come and say such things are neither biblical nor true. In short you willingly went for counterfeit there’s genuine that exists which is biblical and true.

    Anyway I am done.

  4. A few weeks ago I became grieved with certain televangelists. What really hurt me was that they prophesied things in Jesus name that were WRONG. But Father told me not to take up an offense for him. I did not know I was doing this. The spirit of offense is a strategy of Satan to disunite us. We have to recognize this and repent of it, before we can truly listen to each other. It is possible that Priscilla, in her desire to be faithful and to protect her benefactors, has innocently given place to a spirit of offense. It is so easy to do! It is even easier to do so when we want to be faithful to the Word.

    1. I am not offended at all I just struggle with the fact that she willingly took part in false activities be it speaking in false tongues, giving false prophetic words then in her blogs seems to be denying the legitimacy of tongues; prophecy etc. My benefactors have their God who called them standing by them my comment in a blog that they likely don’t follow won’t do much for them. Lastly my so called benefactors acted like Peter towards Tabitha, as vessels to carry God’s power that brought me deliverance and that’s something that even heaven attests to.

      1. Priscilla, I am SO SORRY I misjudged you. I do agree with you that we must not throw out the baby with the bathwater. The main point of my comment was that all of us can unconsciously take up an offense for someone we love, even though we would be careful not to be offended for ourselves. All of us, even me, even Dawn, and anyone who wants to be faithful to the Word, must also be careful not to take up an offense for the Truth. However, it is excellent and helpful to contrast the True and the False, which is why I read this blog.
