An Urgent Plea to the Body of Christ

An Urgent Plea to the Body of Christ

I sit here late on a Sunday night with a pit in my stomach, grieving for the church. For over a week now, I have heard about a prophecy concerning the Superbowl, the Chiefs and revival pending their win. Many were banking on this victory as it was prophesied as a sign of a great move of God on the horizon. I was not. It was troubling. As I personally watched the game, I found myself having several thoughts and an account in the gospel of Matthew came to my remembrance at the finale of the game that deepened the pit in my stomach. Despite the pushback that this post might incite, I believe it is necessary. I have no ill will or malice for anyone, but I have an urgent and humble plea to the church at large: we must get back to the Word of God, to Jesus Christ as our focus and we should stop chasing signs.

In Matthew, there are two accounts of the scribes and the Pharisees approaching Jesus with this request, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” These are found in Matthew 12:38 and 16:1, which the latter was asked by the Sadducees and the Pharisees. Mind you, this was after they had witnessed Jesus heal a man’s withered hand and do great things that testified of Him being the Messiah. Let us not forget that signs and wonders occurred to testify of Jesus Christ and the glory of God. Yet there were those who sought further signs as a test. These were the passages that came to mind tonight while remembering Jesus’ answer, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” This was testifying of Himself and His time to come in the heart of the earth, the same amount of time Jonah spent in the belly of the whale. He tells them that “something greater than Jonah and Solomon is here.” (Matthew 12:41,42) It is pretty amazing how the Old Testament testifies of Jesus Christ in even the smallest of details.

An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. That gripped me when I recalled it because this is what I am concerned is happening in parts of the church with words such as these and manifestations that are not tested. We have closed our Bibles, sealed them shut while we hang on every word of a prophecy having nothing to do with Jesus Christ. Such things today seem man centered, and revival follows suit. It hinges on us being powerful. If the prophecy is about how powerful we will be with a bit of Jesus sprinkled in for good measure, then we are satisfied. Never mind the fact this type of example is essentially interpreting an omen, which is forbidden in Scripture. (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) We are not instructed to seek such things. God forbid things like this because it led people away from Him. Please hear this. We must be willing to test everything being said and done to make sure it is sound and biblically based, regardless of who it is.

There is a strong push to focus on signs and wonders, and if you do not have them then you are powerless. Peter witnessed the transfiguration on the mount, and yet Peter stated that even more sure than what he and others witnessed and heard was the prophetic word, the Word of God, the prophecy of Scripture. (2 Peter 1:16-21) This is our more sure Word, the written Word of God, and it is the power unto salvation for the Jew first and then the Gentile. (Romans 1:16) This is to be our foundation.

So, considering all of this, are we really banking a move of God on the outcome of a football game? Are we really going to practice numerology and the meaning of the win based upon the physical date? Call me whatever, but this is not biblical. Furthermore, there is one name I have heard reverenced more for this prophecy and it sure is not Jesus Christ. God became a side note in this and that is heartbreaking and telling. This game was said by some to be ordained by God in its outcome. I suppose we will simply overlook the perversion and sexual tone of the halftime show with pole dancing and scantily clad women while commercials containing unbiblical lifestyle choices and feminist undertones resonated throughout the night in addition to sex trafficking. As long as the prophecy is “fulfilled”, the means has nothing to do with the end here, right? As long as we get revival, that is all that matters. Church, with all due respect, when we are chasing signs like this, it is not representing Christ well and it sets us up to chase another Christ that cannot save.

What if the Chiefs had lost? Would God’s hands have been tied until the next time the Chiefs were in the Superbowl, or is God not truly sovereign? Would there have been those who would have accepted the prophecy on a technicality because of who said it and the adamant desire for revival? Listen, I want to see people come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and to spend eternity with Him. I also understand that the Bible clearly warns us that there will be a great falling away, an apostasy. (2 Thessalonians 2:3) We cannot ignore this. We cannot ignore that we are warned in the Scripture of false prophets, false signs and wonders that will deceive even the elect if possible, and that is from Jesus Christ Himself. (Matthew 24:24) We cannot turn a blind eye to warnings because they are not popular and they do not tickle our ears or our egos.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we must return to the Word of God as our standard of truth and direction. This is the greatest prophetic Word we will ever read or hear. We need to be reading our Bibles more and chasing signs far less. We need to demonstrate that we are disciples of Jesus Christ by mature fruit in our lives, and we are instructed to test everything according to Scripture. I urge you to be sober and to preach Christ and Him crucified first and foremost.

  1. Thank you for this reminder of who God is and that to chase signs and wonders could be so misleading. God is God he is all powerful and to be gloried. A football game is just that a game, can God use anything, yes but we cannot get our eyes off of him and look for signs and wonders. We walk by faith and not sight. Remember it is Gods deep abiding love that seeks to change hearts and minds of man. Is God moving, yes in many great and mighty ways. But we must be careful that we don’t get our eyes off of him and onto whats happening in the world.

  2. Amen. I have heard the same thing from the Lord in regards to the church returning to the Word of God and Prayer. Your article is very good and on point. I’m sure you will face some backlash.. but the tone of their response will reveal their heart.. and where their at with the Lord. Be encouraged woman of God.

  3. I love your passion for Jesus and your desire to please Him in all you do. I am a Pastor of a wonderful church in Albertville, Alabama. I grew up being raised by Jehovah’s Witness parents. I was trained to depend totally on the “Governing Body” who were referred to in JW literature as “the faithful and discreet slave” who fed the masses “meat in due season.” Long story short, I had a glorious encounter with Jesus on October 28, 1984. I was baptized in a Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL (my wife & 2 children had been attending for a year) and fell head over heels in love with Christ’s beautiful Body. On April 28, 1984, we attended Huffman Assembly of God. I knew nothing about Holy Spirit. Nothing was ever the same after that wonderful day. I love the Pentecostal movement, message, and emphasis on missions. I’ve been ordained as an Assemblies of God minister since 2001. (That’s my intro.) Over the last 34+ years, I have heard numerous messages in tongues & interpretations, & heard and/or read countless “prophetic words.” I know so many dear Believers who always are eager to share what a prophet/prophetess is “saying”. Many of our congregation’s prayer team have their “favorite”, as a matter of fact. In 1997, the Lord put me on the floor during a Sunday night service & totally changed my ministry & my life. Over a 4+ hour experience (which felt like 3 minutes), He showed me my future in ministry & shared much more than I can or should right now. The one thing that He commanded of me in that encounter was this: “Speak My Word, not your own. Teach My children to treasure & to remember My Word. Teach them to depend only upon My Word & to listen for My Voice as they read & meditate daily in the Scriptures. Model to them what it means to love, to honor, & to obey My Word. Show My people how to cherish My Word.” He then “tattooed” Psalm 138:2 on my soul. From that day forward, I’ve endeavored with all my heart to exalt His Word & to point others to a dependence upon every Word that proceeds from the mouth of GOD. I am heartbroken at the cheapening of God’s Word in recent years and the marketing gimmicks by many who claim to follow the Lord and to fellowship with Holy Spirit. I don’t know anyone who TRULY knows & reveres God’s Word that would fall for a “prophetic word” involving a sports game. It is tragically apparent that there is very little reverence for true prophetic gifting. Maybe that is due to the sham efforts of those who seek to promote a dependence upon themselves rather than a deepening dependence & reverence for God’s Word alone. His Word is sufficient, complete, & totally satisfying to those who prioritize God’s Truth. Thank you for reproving this evil tendency toward deception. May God be pleased in all you do for His glory & honor alone!

    1. Love your reply. This really touched my heart as God has pulled me away from all my “prophetic” friends and placed me back in a church that is more biblically sound. I got saved in a Church of God in 2005 and had slowly drifted from that into a “prophetic house” that God ultimately moved me from and showed me the error of which afterwards. Saw you were baptized in AL, so God bless you from Mississippi!

      1. Thank you kindly, Stacie! I grew up in Greenwood, MS & moved to Alabama when my Dad took a new job in Birmingham (1969). God bless you as you pursue Him and His truth!!

  4. Amen. Basically, I’m glad we were at church during the half time show. So glad we missed it.
But I’m am concerned over my granddaughters. They may have watched it with the other side of their family.

  5. I am by no means qualified to preach and even teach the Word. I love Jesus and pray often that He can use this lowly servant for His will. That my mistakes, my past sin & deliverence will testify to the saving grace, mercy, love that the Father sent to us thru Jesus Christ. He is everything we long for, it is all in Him. And I pray Holy Spirit searches my heart & mind to find any wickedness or false beliefs and bring them to my attention to correct me.
I agree with you that the Church needs to get back to the Word, to Jesus Christ & Him crucified. I truly believe that God spoke to Bob Jones…this backwards hillbilly drunk fr NC. I often wonder what it would’ve been like to be a apart of Azusa St, Brownsville( among many others), to be there to watch Jesus heal thru Smith Wigglesworth, Kathryn Kuhlman, Benny Hinn, Lester Sumrall and many others. Like, I believe He uses all kinds of people. Some random young man placed his hand on my back and prayed for healing…God told him to do that and I could feel things moving. I don’t know…i just felt a wave of freshness come hearing what God told Bob Jones about the chiefs. To me i see it similiar to ” when u get to the big brick house, hang a left”. I desire to see a great outpouring, the true third awakening…to be a part of leading those to Jesus that He puts in my path. I am invigorated by Jesus and honored to live at this time in His plan, for His Glory. I am no theologian, just a daughter. Bless u!

  6. I understand your concern but pray you don’t make it an absolute. Signs do have a place in the kingdom, but they’re not meant be taken alone. Jesus didn’t mean to say signs are evil, only that signs are one witness and by two or more is a thing established. The word is also one witness requiring the Spirit. When we fall on one side to the exclusion of the other, we are left with nothing of real value.

    1. Thank you for what you said. What I was thinking and you put it well. We can go to far either way.

  7. I. Don’t know what prophecy you are referring to, but I do know that God can sometimes use the natural thing to confirm His word. I believe both in the Word and the Spirit and that the main thing is that Jesus be glorified. They will know we are Christian by our love, for God is love!

  8. Revival is synonymous with holiness You cant have revival without holiness and where there is holiness the people are in revival. I have never understood how truly Gods people can be front and center of events like superbowl. There is nothing about God in superbowl it’s an event organized in hell. We should have nothing to do with it as believers.

  9. I got saved in a Baptist church as a child but not discipled. When God spoke to me audibly in my late 20’s that it was “time to go back to church”, I joined a Presbyterian Church. After many years of yearning for more of Jesus, I moved on to a Foursquare Church. I got my MDiv. Then I was at an independent church loosely affiliated with Bethel. It was signs and wonders and prophesy all the way. Now with my teenage son something more traditional, we are back at a Presbyterian Church. Mind you, I am almost 60 y/o so I’m not exactly church hopping. This is 4 churches in over 30 years. Here is what I have found. Every single one of these churches was pursuing Jesus with their whole heart. Every pastor was doing the best he/she could to reveal God’s truth as they saw it. There were plenty of differences. I feel comfortable in every single setting. You know why? Because I serve a big God. I know this word that you mention. I know the people who gave it. You don’t have anything to be afraid of. There is no apostasy to unroot. You serve a big God. He is able to keep your foot and all of our feet from slipping. If the Chief’s had not of won, it would not have been a sign that the time is now. That’s all. No tieing of God’s hands. nothing to be afraid of. But the Chief’s did win. So now people have renewed hope of THIS being a time of a great move of God. Where people get saved from every tribe and tongue and nation. Not a cake walk because we still have a lot of doubt, fear and judgement to overcome in each one of us. But I think it is an exciting time. And if revival doesn’t happen? Then we know the word wasn’t true. But the worst thing that can happen is that we all get fired up and work just a little harder at the Great Commission. I am not sure what there is to be afraid of. So I speak peace to your hearts and to everyone’s heart who is very afraid of anyone wandering from God’s word. I don’t see it happening in the Spirit filled churches. But I do think we all need to be careful not to quench the spirit. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:19. You might want to read a 20 year old book called “Quenching the Spirit” by William DeArteaga. Just because you haven’t experienced something doesn’t mean it isn’t from God. I trust that so long as my eyes and heart are on Him, I don’t need to worry. Remember he won’t give us a snake if we ask for an fish. Read Luke 11: 11-13. He can keep us safe. He is able. 🙂

    1. Hi, Sheryl. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience and insight. I would like to say that for years I listened to teachings from Bethel and even read books from there. The only church I ever really knew was the Charismatic church after having been at the same one for 18 years until last year. Personally, I am not afraid but rather concerned after seeing many things for so long and coming to realize that the Bible warns us of teachings that could preach another gospel, hence another Christ (Galatians 1:6-9) and sadly it is going on in this time. There are many things I have experienced in the Charismatic church and after searching the Scripture, I have found that my experiences do not override The Word of God. They are to be tested in accordance with Scripture. The verse following quenching the Holy Spirit also says to not despise prophecies but to test everything. This would lead me to believe that testing is not quenching the Spirit since the Scripture is God breathed according 2 Timothy 3:16 and we are instructed to do this very thing. God does keep us safe and He does this by His Word and by leading of the Holy Spirit in accordance with the truth so that we know what is acceptable and pleasing to Him. As for Bethel, I personally can no longer listen to their teaching as it would seem that there are things being ministered that are not Scripturally based. By no means do I believe that I know everything or have all of the answers as we all are still learning and growing. However, knowing what I do know having spent time reading and studying, I cannot support some of the things going on. As always, I appreciate comments and respect you and anyone else if we disagree. God bless!

  10. This was so good and right on with me personally. Thank you for admitting that you don’t support Bethel anymore. I don’t either. Thank you for saying stop seeking signs and wonders. Too much of the gospel is being left out while people need salvation. Signs and wonders will not save a lost. Only by the hearing of the Word of God! Signs and wonders aren’t meant to be front and center. Jesus Christ and Him crucified is to be everything!!!

  11. Thank you Dawn. I’ve spent the last 24 hrs. expressing these concerns. In preparation I did a blog on ‘football omenology’ 2 weeks ago. Interpreting omens have corrupted the prophetic. I appreciate your endeavours to address tDhe issues in the Body that are threatening it’s health, safety and effectiveness for God’s Kingdom. There seems to be very few prophets left that I don’t have to put in quotes, when referencing them. There are, seriously, very few left. Dawn, you shine as the dawn of the morning. God bless, you are needed, appreciated, valued. Sincere love in Christ, Daryl

  12. Great word, Dawn! And also an excellent reply to our sister who sounds like she thinks we are “fearing apostasy” or something in that vein. No, we are respecting the Word of God and its warnings, and Dawn is rightly discerning and warning in accordance with Scripture! Forgive my bluntness but it is not at all a good thing that one can “be comfortable in any church whatsoever.” That is a SIGN and a WONDER of “Where is discernment?” 🙂 Sorry, but Scripture is very very very LOUD in that regard.
I add my recognition that Bethel is heretical. There are currently plenty of evidences and personal testimonies to that fact, not to mention the witness of sound, TRUE APOSTOLIC doctrine.

  13. Beautifully Written Mrs. Dawn. Thank you for always speaking the truth no matter how heavy it may seem. There are definitely more with you than against you.❤

  14. Very well put… thank you for sharing. We are living in the last days for sure! So many scriptures unfolding right before our eyes and so many being blinded by the enemy. I pray for God’s Spirit to move on this nation and around the world; to open the hearts and minds of people so they too can be saved and dwell in God’s house forever! God bless!

  15. Thank you for being bold enough to share the truth Word of God. America, please open your eyes and see the hidden agenda of satan. Lets not love sports with all of its garbage and find pleasure in it. It’s not of God!!
